Been experimenting with the surface of these plates trying to figure out how to best bring out the texture.
Leaning heavier into this blue slip for the next firing, it’s so lovely when a test turns out better than you imagine.
Been a cup factory the last week and behind the scenes I’ve been practicing throwing larger and wider forms then I’m comfortable with , cutting them in half to learn from them is sometimes a bit heart breaking but each time they get a bit
This cup was likely located in front of one of the spy ports we spray the soda mixture through. I just love how each piece in a soda firing has its own lovely variations. While preparing for the next firing, I’m thinking about the surfaces of t
I love the contrast of the dark clay body and roughly brushed white slip on this cup. It allows the movement of the decoration to breathe and be seen. As a painter, there is something so emotional about an expressive brush stroke and I’m please
Why do handle sessions always take longer than you want them to? Long day, but the hours pay off.
One of the few pedestal mugs I had in this firing. Not sure why I didn’t have more but I remedied that today and threw a few variations of them. Giving them more height, volume, and movement in the body this time. Definitely wanna use this slip
Experimented with a few different clay bodies this firing including a white stoneware. It’s amazing how much a clay body can change the surface of the slip decoration. On the white stoneware the blue softened and became a bit transparent and ga
I continued to explore these composite jars but had an issue with the clay body I made most of them in so here is the one that wasn’t in that clay body.

Still intriguing, I want to push them further in proportions and surface. As well as not
Love a good flashing slip! <3
A bowl experiment from the last soda firing. I like the contrast between the brighter inside and darker outside.
I made a ton of cups for this firing and really loved how this blue slip came out. Sometimes you just gotta trust your gut even then the test tiles are underwhelming.
In this firing I continued to iterate on the slab plates I’ve been working on honing the surface of. I already have some ideas to test for the next round.

I do enjoy the mixing of light and dark clay bodies within the stack… maybe ther
Here’s a little group shot of some of my favorite cups from my recent firing.

I spent the last few months preparing work to fill the soda kiln. Having learned so much from the last firing, I was excited to continue to explore and experiment wi
It’s always an exciting day when there is a kiln to unload, cannot wait to finish cleaning up and photographing the pieces from the soda firing.
Continuing to fall in love with the surfaces you can get when soda firing.
